Breast Reconstruction Breast reconstruction is an emotionally-rewarding surgery for patients who have lost one or both breasts to breast cancer or from trauma or another condition.  It is a highly individualized procedure that can dramatically improve a patient’s self-image and potentially improve a patient’s quality of life. Breast reconstruction can be performed using a patient’s own tissue from the abdomen or the back or can be performed using a breast implant. Breast reconstruction involves stages that can begin at the time of mastectomy or can be delayed until a patient heals from her mastectomy and any other additional cancer treatments that might be required. Not only can a breast mound be recreated but the nipple complex is also recreated and can be color tattooed to match the patients opposite breast.  If breast reconstruction is performed at the time of mastectomy, a one to two night hospitalization is typical for most patients.
